During my round the world trip, Mykonos made me fall in love with Greece and the following hotels were a huge part of the romance.

San Marco Hotel
Where to stay in Mykonos? How about Poolside at San Marco Hotel?!
Susan and I stayed two nights at the San Marco Hotel, about 10 minutes drive from the main town (Chora/Mykonos Town) tucked into some arid hills. It was early May, so the weather wasn’t quite ideal (read: butt cold & very windy) for poolside lounging, but we made the best of it.
There was so much I loved about this hotel! It was removed from the hustle & bustle of town which I grew to appreciate once we moved closer, but the free shuttle driven by the dreamy Demetrius made the distance a non-issue.

I don’t know why it surprised me so much, but I couldn’t believe how hospitable the staff was. We immediately felt like family! Hera took care of us at breakfast every morning, ensuring we had PLENTY to eat at the free breakfast buffet, and Demetrius and the guys at the front desk were always checking in to make sure we ate at the best restaurants and visited the prettiest beaches.
Vencia Boutique Hotel
For one of the best views of the famous Mykonos sunset, don’t miss Vencia Boutique Hotel, perched on a hill above the main town.

It was still a bit chilly for swimming in Vencia’s gorgeous infinity pool, but Susan and I managed to get a bit of lounging in. Bartender Demetrius (yes, another Demetrius!) also played DJ, and was thankfully open to requests. I particularly enjoyed his ABBA mix – after all, Mamma Mia was one of my inspirations for visiting Greece!

When you book at Vencia, you’ll chat with Stella, the brilliant, super-friendly gal at the front desk. She’s so sweet that you won’t want to leave. If you visit, tell her I said hello! The whole property has been recently refurbished, so while it still has the classic Cycladic architecture that you demand from a Mykonos vacation, it feels new and fresh and clean.
Mamma Mia – Here we go again!
Even if you don’t stay at Vencia, it’s a prime spot to enjoy a sunset dinner at the Karavaki restaurant. When I was able to tear myself away from Katerina’s (full post to come!), Vencia was an excellent choice for a tasty Greek meal. And afterward, since Vencia was walking distance to town, Susan & I wandered down after the lovely sunsets to dance the night away at some of Mykonos’ famous hotspots. (My only warning: watch out for English boys on vacation. They’re fun to dance with but… well, I’ll tell you later.)

The Myconian Ambassador
My stay at the Relais & Chateaux property, the Myconian Ambassador, spoiled me absolutely rotten and I still haven’t recovered. I had a gorgeous suite overlooking Platis Yialos, my favorite beach on Mykonos, and my OWN HOT TUB. Moving forward, I probably shouldn’t have my own glorious hot tub, because it’s just too wonderful. I strutted around in my bathrobe for 5 days watching the sun rise and the yachts come and go. Yes, it was a brilliant week.
Though The Ambassador is about 15 minutes away from Mykonos Town, public bus service is cheap, about 1.40 Euros each way, and frequent. The downside is it only runs until about 11 pm, so you’ll have to take a cab home after dancing in town… and that runs about 10-15 Euros. Though the property itself is larger and less intimate than the other boutiques I stayed in, it still felt peaceful & romantic. For better or worse!

The Ambassador is a 3-minute walk down to the beach and offers free lounge chairs & umbrellas – particularly helpful when chairs go for up to 15 Euros in high season. And if you’re not a beach person, the pool is close enough to *feel* like you’re in the Mediterranean (Or Aegean or whatever. Never could quite figure it out.) without getting all salty.
And again, the service was lovely! Amazing front desk staff, about 30 bottles of various bath goodies in the bathroom, a state-of-the-art spa and the best complimentary breakfast I had during my entire stay in Greece. My only complaint about this property was that I found it a bit noisy in the morning… but that’s probably because I watched the sun rise at least half of my nights in Mykonos, so I was still snoozing in my gorgeously soft bed until nearly noon. At any rate, you definitely can’t go wrong at The Ambassador if you’re looking for big luxury!
