The Beautiful Traveler – May 2013 Edition

Beautiful Traveler is a monthly series featuring the beauty products I love to travel with. After two years on the road, I learned that you might be able to skimp on clothing and get by with a couple pairs of shoes, but there’s no substitute for taking care of your skin, hair and health while seeing the world.

OSEA Malibu

I had a glorious 90-minute Sea of Life facial at One Ocean Resort & Spa in Atlantic Beach, Fla., last month, and it was that experience that lead me to adopt OSEA Malibu’s skincare products into my travel routine. OSEA – Ocean, Sun, Earth and Atmosphere – products are all vegan, organic, derived from seaweed and filled with vitamins and minerals, and while I’m not usually crunchy at all, I am definitely swayed by anything that touts itself as anti-aging.

OSEA Malibu Dry

Currently in my travel bag: OSEA Ocean Cleanser, Essential Hydrating Oil and Advanced Protection Cream. I was using the pink Sea Vitamin Boost for a moisture spritz, but the whole bottle leaked into my makeup bag on a flight from Punta Cana to Samana, Dominican Republic, a few weeks ago. Ugh, I feel like that happens to me all the time!

Alas, the Ocean Cleanser is incredibly active and I’ve noticed a positive change in my skin since I started using it. And surprisingly, I’ve been experimenting with the hydrating oil instead of my usual lotion moisturizer and it works great – and doesn’t leave me oily.

Birchbox

Oh, how I love my monthly Birchbox! Birchbox touts itself as the best way to discover new grooming, beauty and lifestyle products. Every month, for just $10, you receive a box of samples with goodies from high-end brands – stuff you might not splurge for in the full size without first trying in the tiny size.

I’ve always been a bit of a sample-size hoarder, so every month, like a giddy schoolgirl, I dutifully check my mailbox for the latest arrival. In the past six months, I’ve adopted several of the products I sampled … Kerastase Elixir Ultime for hair, Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls, Lancome La Base Pro, Vasanti BrightenUp!, DDF Wrinkle Resist Plus… the list goes on and on. And everything comes in sample (read: travel) size, so it’s easy to transfer from the Birchbox to the suitcase without adding a ton of weight.

Is it necessary? Of course not. No beauty product is necessary. But I sure love the little surprise gift from myself every single month. It’s the little things in life…

AND, Birchbox makes a fun gift for a bride or mom-to-be. Check it out here: Birchbox.com.

C. Booth Coconut Fig Body Lotion

Though it’s possible (especially if you’re a guy) to fly sans-toiletries and just depend on your hotel to provide shampoo, conditioner and lotion, honestly you never know what you’re going to get. Rarely have I met a hotel conditioner that was suitable for my crazy mane, and you never quite know if the lotion will be some hideous fragrance or funky formulation that makes your skin squeak. (It happens!)

Now that I found c. Booth 4-in-1 Coconut Fig Body Lotion, I’m packing it into a 3.5 oz. jar and taking it with me on my next jaunt. It smells like summer, it moisturizes perfectly and it’s inexpensive – like, under $10 for a huge bottle that you can easily top off travel sizes with.

Check out Freeman Beauty for more c. Booth products. (I’m also using the All-Over-Body Sea Salt Scrub, but it’s not as easy to transfer to a travel size, so it’s more of a home luxury!)
