When you think about it, it makes sense that a professional world traveler like me hails from Florida’s First Coast. I grew up learning about the Spanish explorers who discovered St. Augustine and daydreaming about what it must’ve been like to sail across the Atlantic to an unknown new world. I’ve picnicked at 500-year-old Castillo de San Marcos since I was knee-high to a grasshopper, frolicked at the Fountain of Youth and spent more date nights carousing on St. George Street than I can recall. I got my wanderlust honest, that’s for sure.
Hailing from this region, folks often ask me about where to stay in St. Augustine. There are so many historic hotels and B&Bs in the Old City, it can be overwhelming to choose the right one. So I’m here to help!
Where to Stay in St. Augustine, Florida
Elegant & Opulent
Built in 1888, Casa Monica is a Moorish Revival/Spanish Baroque-style hotel, and a real grande dame of St. Augustine. Over the years, the property has hosted dignitaries like the King and Queen of Spain and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and countless gorgeous weddings. If you’re looking to splash out in the Old City, this is the place to do it.
Historic
Built sometime around 1791, the St. Francis Inn is one of the oldest structures in the city. Suites feature antique furnishings and decor, balconies and fireplaces. There’s also a shaded courtyard for daydreaming on balmy afternoons. Parking is free, bicycles are available to explore the narrow streets and full gourmet breakfast is included.
Romantic
Coming to visit in time for Nights of Lights? Just steps from St. George Street, the Carriage Way Bed & Breakfast is ideally situated for such explorations! The house is within a few minutes of everything on your St. Augustine bucket list, including restaurants and attractions. The Victorian home was built sometime around 1883, and its verandas drip with Southern charm. All the rooms and suites are named for gemstones, and it makes sense. This place is a sweet little gem in the Old City.
Kid-free Beach
There are two sides to St. Augustine: the historic Old City and St. Augustine Beach over on Anastasia Island. To get the full picture, you’ll want to spend time in both. Check out adults-only Beachfront Bed & Breakfast once you’ve had your fill of forts and fountains. The property offers just a handful of rooms, all with private bathrooms. There’s a heated outdoor pool and hot tub, landscaped gardens and a friendly atmosphere. With calming views of the Atlantic Ocean, it’s an idyllic spot to unwind.
Family Friendly Beach
While not directly on the ocean, the Courtyard St. Augustine Beach is just a few minutes walk to the coast and of course, there’s a pool! And all the amenities you’d expect from a chain hotel. The St. Augustine Amphitheatre is just 3 miles away, so it’s a great spot to overnight after a concert. (I’ve seen Flight of the Conchords and Weezer here – such a great venue!) And you’re close to Anastasia State Park, The Alligator Farm & St. Augustine Surf School.
