The Beautiful Traveler is a monthly series featuring the products, gadgets and accessories I love to travel with. After two years on the road, I learned that you might be able to skimp on clothing and get by with a couple pairs of shoes, but there’s no substitute for taking care of your skin, hair and health while seeing the world. Read on for this month’s picks and giveaway…
September has been an insane month, folks, — so insane that this edition of The Beautiful Traveler is barely sliding in under the wire, and my beauty regimen has just about gone out the window. Now I look like this:
Just kidding. I look like this:
Just kidding. Seriously it’s been a busy month full of 20-hour workdays, crazed PR events filled with zombies (which explain the photos) and countless hours hunched over my laptop. I’m looking forward to taking a little time off around my birthday in November, but in the meantime, I’m moisturizing, eating well and accessorizing in the hopes no one notices I am starting to get a few dark circles under my eyes. Just a few.
I’ve never been much of a watch person, choosing to use my iPhone instead, but I recently started wearing a lolly watch and I have to say, I feel like both a cool kid and a savvy adult wearing it. I feel like an adult because, hey, smart, important grown-ups can often be seen checking their watches to show just how valuable their time is, right? And I feel like a kid because this awesome little timepiece is scented.
Yes, it SMELLS!
Like the delicious scented markers of our childhoods, the lolly watch ($85) comes in 8 colors with corresponding fruit scents including orange, apple, pineapple, black currant, grape, blueberry, coconut and strawberry. I chose coconut-scented white watch and I am crazy about it. It goes with everything, I get more compliments on it than I ever would’ve imagined and I don’t need to constantly check my iPhone like some kind of social media addict. (Who me?!)
Plus, it’s always fun to say, “HEY! Smell my watch!” The ensuing confusion and perplexed looks I get would make a great Vine video.
Made from sustainable Eco-Resin polymer, the water-resistant watches are hypoallergenic and biodegradable. For each watch sold, a tree is planted in its honor. If you’re at all concerned about how your purchases affect the environment, lolly watch is a great company to support.

It sounds crazy, like, really, certifiably crazy, but sometimes after a meal if I want something sweet, I’ll just take a big whiff of my coconut watch and it satiates me enough that I can say no to a cupcake. I told you it sounds crazy, but it works for me! As does…
The premise of the Beautiful Traveler is that living out of a suitcase doesn’t mean we stop taking care of ourselves, but I confess, I’m the first to throw healthy eating choices out the window at the first sign of delicious local cuisine. Last year I managed to stack on some hefty pounds, particularly in Jordan, Italy and Spain where the food is just so plentiful and delectable and calorically astronomical.
Fast forward to now – over a year later, and I’m still working off the quarts of olive oil and tons of pasta. Once it finally dawned on me that my own efforts were futile – I wasn’t losing any weight and I was just getting more frustrated – I decided to go back to what worked for me when I was a takeout-addicted New Yorker, Weight Watchers.
It may sound obvious, but recording my daily food intake is the key to helping me make better choices throughout the day. It also helps that I’m never starving and I never have to deprive myself of a food if I really want it. I just have to plan better. To date I’ve lost 13 lbs. and I have at least that much more to go to hit my goal. It’s slow going, but it’s going to happen!
So what does this have to do with being a beautiful traveler? Well, the Weight Watchers app on my iPhone has been instrumental in keeping me on track – even when I’m on the road. This month I’ve been to Orlando and to the Florida Keys on work trips, and I was able to stick with my food plan because I continued monitoring. It’s easy to say, “Ah well, I’m on vacation, I can eat whatever I want!” But when you’re a frequent traveler, that’s a setup for disaster.
If you’re struggling with putting on weight while you travel, I’d be happy to talk to you about my WW experience. And no, I’m not a paid spokesperson at all. Just someone who believes in the program!
Vaseline Spray & Go Moisturizer
Fashion Week and all its decadent parties and runway shows took place this month, including STRUT, The Fashionable Mom Show sponsored by Vaseline Spray & Go. The product is a non-greasy new spray lotion designed to absorb super fast so you can put your clothes right on, and the celebrity moms who walked in the show used it before strutting on the runway.
Vaseline sent me a bottle to try for The Beautiful Traveler, and I think it’s a really clever addition for your checked bag. At 6.5 oz., it’s not carry-on friendly, but if you’re going on a longer trip, it’s light and easy to take, and it really does absorb in seconds.
It’s kinda perfect for the days when you don’t pack until 3 hours before you’re scheduled to depart… who me?!
GIVEAWAY: Want to try Vaseline Spray & Go Moisturizer? I have three bottles to give away, so leave a comment by Oct. 12 and let me know where you’re going on your next trip. I’ll pick three random winners on Oct. 13. Good luck!
Headed to the Florida Keys anytime soon? Do I ever have a spa recommendation for you!
When it comes to massage, you never quite know what you’re going to get. Anytime I venture outside the 60-minute normal massage zone, I find myself feeling a little too raw or pinched or smelly. (Looking at you seaweed massage in Bali and a salt scrub in The Bahamas!)
I was in the Florida Keys a few weeks ago checking out the spa menu at Cheeca Lodge on Islamorada, and my first thought when I saw the Hot Lava Shell Massage was, “Why would anyone want to get massaged with a shell? Sounds kinda pokey.” But it’s the signature treatment, so I figured it was worth investigating.
Long live hard-hitting journalism!
Good news. My investigation uncovered that the tiger clam shells are not reclaimed straight from the sea and jabbed onto your back like I first imagined. First, they’re polished to a smooth, shiny finish. Then the hollow inside is filled with a mix of minerals, algae and salt water which, when combined, create a chemical reaction. That reaction causes heat … and the heat? Oh, it’s divine.
The masseuse takes the hot, smooth shells and gently works them all over for a most relaxing experience. As someone with wicked back and neck problems, I was surprised just how much the shells helped to work out the tension & knots. It was exactly what I needed to get me through the insanity that was September. For a 60 minute treatment, the price is $150.
That’s it for this month’s edition of The Beautiful Traveler. So tell me, would you wear a scented watch? Have you found a way to stay fit on the road? Have you ever been massaged with clam shells? Let’s discuss!
