Volunteering Abroad – Help Me Help Others

Have you volunteered in Kenya? Gone on a short term mission trip to Greece? Support friends working in Peru? Know of an orphanage in Tanzania that could use an extra set of hands?

Then I need your help!

In early 2010, I was reading Tim Keller’s Counterfeit Gods as part of my “10 Goals in 2010” initiative (right, I have themed initiatives for my own life, complete with Powerpoint presentations.) As I was reading, I began to feel very convicted for prioritizing work and city life over all the things that used to be so important to me, particularly volunteering domestically and going on short term missions abroad.

Since I was a kid, I have had a heart for missions, and when I lived in Atlanta and had a bit more free time, I was much more focused on that calling than I was when I lived in NYC.

Now that I have a wide open year ahead of me, in addition to traveling and writing and meeting new folks, I am hoping to fill much of my year with volunteer opportunities. During my three trips to Bolivia, I worked with orphans, with abandoned, drug addicted street kids and on construction projects from brick-laying to painting to house-building. I’m up for just about anything as long as I am being useful. I can spend a day or a week or a month depending on a million factors, and since many of you have participated in some type of voluntourism, I value your suggestions!

    Wow Angie!

You sound like a great candidate for one of our volunteer abroad programs (http://www.culturalembrace.com/volunteer.html)! We have programs all over the world from Africa and Asia to New Zealand. We would love to hear from someone as kind hearted as you!

I know that my brother and sister volunteered with this orphanage for two months. It’s located at the base of Kilimanjaro.

Also if you have plans to hit up India. http://www.projectrescue.com/ Project Rescue is a REALLY neat organization that works with girls rescued from the sex-slave industry.

Hey Angie! Congrats on your big adventure. I’ve been to South Africa twice, so I have tons of recommendations for you there. Plus, I have made hookups and plenty of places you can volunteer. My friends there will make sure you are safe and know where to go. They will even come pick you up and invite you to their house for dinner. Nicest people I know! Email me for deets 🙂
